Ulama Development Programme

About the Programme

Over the last few decades, our lives as Muslims have been transformed in remarkably new ways. These shifts in behaviour, expectations, and experiences provide serious challenges to traditional Muslim scholars in preserving our important traditional Islamic values. One of the most productive ways to turn change and challenge into something positive, is to develop Muslim scholars and leaders who are well grounded in Islamic knowledge, have a good understanding of the social environment they are dealing with, and have immense spiritual drive. This requires us to develop courses that address areas which are not commonly taught in Islamic seminaries but are essential to produce fully rounded traditional Muslim scholars who live up to these expectations. Muslim scholars have always been at the forefront of dealing with societal challenges, be they of an academic nature, or those requiring several different skill sets. Historically, the Islamic tradition has grown in its scope in response to these challenges and has dealt with several diverse disciplines related to antagonistic ideologies, changing political landscapes, shifting social paradigms, philosophical world views and has try to maintain traditional Islamic values.
Muslim scholars who have spiritual drive, academic depth and exceptional skills can lead social change effectively and address priorities which promote important Islamic values.
There have been many attempts by Muslim scholars to address many important issues related to our contemporary world. However, these issues have grown both horizontally and vertically to the degree that sometimes our current application to new and challenging issues is unfortunately still in its prime stages. The horizontal growth is one which requires us to go back to the sources of our substantive law, jurisprudence and ethics and tease out the nuances, and essential shariʿ principles that are important and provide the guidance and framework to allow us to articulate Islamic responses to technical questions.
This requires Muslim scholars to have some expertise in broader areas of theology, ʿilm al-kalām, tafsīr, ḥadīth, tārīkh and other ʿulūm. For example, the application of fiqh is proving quite challenging and is crossing the lines of enquiry which question concepts we have never explored before or ever thought possible like artificial intelligence, living as minority Muslims. The vertical growth is where Islamic knowledge has now diversified beyond just the core Islamic sciences, and into many other specialities making it intersectional with sciences such as philosophy of science, epistemology, metaphysics, anthropology, global society and politics and other areas of humanities and social sciences. To meet these challenges requires us to prepare a generation of traditional Muslim scholars who have the background knowledge and the skillset to work closely with academics, professionals and their communities in providing both good leadership qualities and aptitude to deliver the Islamic response that is both appropriate and informed through a multidisciplinary approach.
